Weekend to Portsmouth and Test Valley
28th to 30th March, 2003
Our thanks go to Lisa and Laura from Test Valley Tourism for helping us with arrangements for the weekend.
Accommodation:
We stayed at the Quality Hotel, Andover.
Friday 28th March
Some of us hitched a ride in our touring coach (supplied by Redwing Coaches), from
Victoria Train Station. Our driver was John.
We arrived in Andover mid afternoon and checked in to our Hotel.
Evening visit to The Hawk Conservancy, an award-winning attraction for a BBQ Dinner followed by
an excellent special show for IATM, "Owls by torchlight".
Saturday 29th March
We travelled by coach to the historic city of Portsmouth.
Our first visit was Charles Dicken's Birthplace Museum
and then we continued to the D-Day Museum with its famous tapestry.
A walk through the new dockside development at Gunwharf Quays took us to the Historic Dockyard where we can had lunch at
Boathouse No 7.
After lunch we visited the “Mary Rose” Exhibition (Henry VIII’s
favourite warship). We then moved on to visit “H.M.S. Warrior”,
the first iron-clad naval vessel.
Our third experience in the dockyard
was “Action Stations”, a new ‘hands-on’ attraction.
We Returned by coach to the hotel at Andover, where the evening was free.
Most of us ate Dinner in the hotel.
Sunday 30th March
Our first visit was to Houghton Lodge Hydroponicum. Houghton Lodge is a beautiful
eighteenth century “Cottage Ornée” set in spacious gardens bordering the River Test
which is frequently used as a film and television location. The Hydroponicum showed
us how to garden without soil or toil. We were given a tour of the hydroponicum
and had free time to tour the gardens.
Tea and coffee was available.
A short coach ride took us to Danebury Vineyard where we had an excellent
presentation and wine-tasting, followed by lunch with wine included.
In the afternoon we drove to Whitchurch where we were
given a tour of the picturesque and historic Whitchurch Silk Mill. The
mill is now a working museum weaving luxurious silks for film costumes and stately homes.
A mid-afternoon departure concluded the weekend.

And we all thought that nobody would listen.
Back in November 1999, we published a draft letter regarding the restriction of movement for Tour Managers in Europe.
We asked members to write to their MEP outlining our problems.
Some members have already done this.
Some members have already received a reply from their MEP's saying that the matter has been referred to Commissioner Liikanen who is
responsible for Tourism and advising us of two courses of action open to us.
We are now looking into this and hopefully will start the ball rolling.
In the meantime if you had thought of writing, but decided that nothing would be done then think again.
Your letter could make all the difference and if we can get more MEP‘s to take this matter up with the commission then maybe things
will be done.
It is worth a try. If you have already written and have not received a reply, chase it up.
After all your MEP is there to represent your rights in Europe to the European Parliament.
Make him or her work for their money.
There is a suggested draft of a letter, which you can copy into your Word Processor, and use as the basis of your protest.
